Burn more calories by varying your walking speed

A person’s metabolic rate increases by approx 20 percent when changing walking speed rather than when walking at a constant pace.

Walking Speed

A study by an engineering professor at Ohio State Universityconcludes that an increased metabolic rate helps burn more calories.

" Measuring the metabolic cost of changing speeds is very important because people don't live their lives on treadmills and do not walk at constant speeds ”, says author co-author Professor ManojSrinivasan.

The study also showed that when walking long distances we naturally increase our speed, and slow our pace over shorter distances.

This is therefore great news to many of us i.e. the simple way to burn more calories when you walk is to vary your speed.

Walking can be a dangerous sport.  Walkers should always be suitably equipped, including carrying and knowing how to use a map and compass.
