Overview |
This is an easy and pleasant walk from Selkirk. The route uses grass paths, farm tracks, quiet country roads and the River Tweed path to reach Melrose. The route passes Abbotsford House, the home of Sir Walter Scott which is well worth a detour to have a look around. |
1 - With the Market Place on the left, continue up the hill past the old Kirk cemetery on the right. Cross the junction and then bear right on the second and along South Port which become The Loan. At the crossroad, cross over and continue ahead
2 - After the road turns left, keep left with a stone wall on the left just before the road sign. Continue along the grass path, crossing over a foot bridge, along a wide green path to a path junction and turn left to a gate. Pass through it and turn right at the road.
3 - Pass through two gates and before reaching the Steading, turn left and follow the bridleway to the road. Turn right past Shawmount cottage on the left to the metal mast on the hill. After just passing it turn left through the wooden gate past Woodlands and then straight across the road.
4 - Continue on the horse trodden track to pass a metal building on the right. Ignore the sign that takes you right as this was flooded Jan 2016. Keep ahead to rejoin the path from the right and then to a road.
5 - Turn right and then left opposite a metal gate. Continue ahead to a T-junction and turn left to the main road. Cross over passing Abbotsford House the home of Sir Walter Scott.
6 - Bear right to pass under the road bridge and continue along the River Tweed path to the suspension bridge. Just before it turn right, direction town centre, to St Mary’s Road. Turn right to the T-junction and turn right on Abbey Street to reach Melrose Abbey and the end of the stage
